Types of crown management

Crown Lifting

Crown Lifting

Crown lifting involves the pruning or removal of lower branches in order to increase clearance beneath the tree for pedestrians, vehicles, buildings, or to improve line-of-sight.... It can also be used to increase diffuse light levels beneath the canopy. Our specialist operatives will consider the requirement for space whilst minimising the number and size of wounds produced, taking care to avoid large pruning wounds being made on the main stem where possible, which would otherwise lead to decay issues in the future.

Crown Reduction

Crown Reduction

Crown reduction pruning is often carried out to maintain or reduce a tree’s overall dimensions, usually where a tree has outgrown its available space.... Some trees respond better to pruning works than others and our specialist operatives will always consider the species of the tree and its suitability for pruning before providing advice and carrying out the works sympathetically, resulting in a natural appearance while maximising the time before pruning is needed again and minimising physiological stress. Crown reductions will also decrease canopy weight and wind-sail effect, which is highly beneficial for managing a tree with a significant structural defect.

Crown Thinning

Crown Thinning

Crown thinning involves the selective removal of branches, evenly distributed throughout the canopy in order to achieve an even density of foliage..., primarily to increase light levels passing through the tree as well and reducing wind-sail effect. Our specialist operatives will always consider the species of the tree and its suitability for thinning before providing advice and carrying out the works sympathetically. Crown thinning is often a good alternative to crown reduction where an improved view of access to sunlight is desired, but the tree is too large to reduce to allow light to pass over the tree, instead allowing a pleasant dappled shade to pass through it.

Reducing away from buildings

Reducing away from buildings

Similar in principle to a crown reduction, but focusing on pruning specific lateral branches either touching or within close proximity to adjacent buildings... in order to prevent branches brushing against or directly damaging buildings and property. Our specialist operatives will always consider the species of the tree and its suitability for pruning before providing advice and carrying out the works sympathetically, resulting in a natural appearance while maximising the time before pruning is needed again and minimising physiological stress.
