What Tree Survey Do I Need?

Tree Surveys come in all different shapes and sizes and so it can sometimes be confusing trying to figure out which one you need.

BS5837 tree surveys for planning

Tree surveys for planning applications are requested by the Local Authorities when trees are within influencing distance of the proposed development. When building near trees, Local Authorities insist upon a professional tree survey to British Standard 5837: (2012), often known as BS5837. This is a standardised assessment of the constraints imposed by trees at your property or development site. Our Elite Arboriculturalists are specialists in these surveys, using specialist survey equipment and AutoCAD Software to allow ease of data sharing with the wider design team.

Tree and Their Association to Risk

Under the Occupiers Liability Act 1954/1980 anyone who owns or manages land containing trees has a legal duty to ensure that they are in a safe condition so that foreseeable damage does not occur due to tree failure. Commercial premises also have obligations under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 to undertake regular tree surveys so that trees do not cause foreseeable damage. Our Elite Arboriculturalists will visit the site and carry out the tree survey which includes plotting the tree/s on a map, collecting the data from the inspection and recommend works to abate any identified risks the tree/s may pose, and compiled into an easy to interpret report.

Specialist Decay Detection Tree Survey

This type of tree survey assesses the extent of decay deep within the tree. Our Elite Arboriculturalists have specialist tree survey equipment including a Resistograph, and an ultrasound PiCUS Tomograph machine.

Trees in Relation to Mortgage Applications

Buying a new home can be stressful enough so before you purchase a property with trees, we advise that a pre-purchase tree survey is commissioned to ensure you don’t get any nasty tree related surprises after the move in day. Many mortgage lenders and insurers will also require a pre-purchase survey to be carried out and provided to them. Some mortgage lenders and insurers may call it a Home Buyers Tree Report.
